Writing in the garden

This is the first post on the updated website which my friend, the hugely talented photographer Naomi Stolow, first tried to din into my brain. Nommie hasn’t been feeling too bright of late, and we all wish a speedy recovery to her gorgeous peepers.

Today I am in the summerhouse with my equally talented friend, writer Lottie McKnight, who has helped redefine/redesign it, yet again. Having shifted my mountains of indolence, she is now helping to control my Luddite tendencies enough to put up this first post. We have, however, been distracted by my Romanian rescue dog, Rosie, who is endeavouring to catch the garden’s resident rat. Lottie has decided that the rat should have a name – gender neutral as we are unsure as to its gender or sexual orientation, and don’t wish to contradict its life choices (so Chris, Lesley/ie, Nic, Sam/Sammy etc.). Rosie, on the other hand, doesn’t give a stuff. She thinks everything in the garden illicitly is a squirrel.

Here’s Rosie (the one on the left) in dominant mode.

Following a marvellous workshop on using scriptwriting techniques to enhance fiction writing, given by Lucy V Hay, I have finally put down the beginnings of a plot for my third novel featuring the Greek Islands (the first two being Terrible With Raisins and Jigsaw Island). This one, as with the others, will be a stand alone, but feature many of the same characters. It will delve into the mystery of an earlier character’s ‘missing’ seven years and question the background of a new lover.

Thank you to Elizabeth Ducie for inviting Teignmouth Writers to join Chudleigh Writers’ Circle at Lucy’s workshop.

Hope June will ‘flame’ in Devon eventually. Be in touch soon…
